Ο καφές στον αραβικό κόσμο
Από την Αφρική ο καφές πέρασε στην Υεμένη, όπου τον έφεραν σκλάβοι από το σημερινό Σουδάν. Η πρώτη αναφορά από τους Μουσουλμάνους γίνεται περίπου στο 900 μ.Χ. στα γραπτά του Πέρση γιατρού Ραζί και υπολογίζεται ότι η παρασκευή του καφέ όπως τη γνωρίζουμε σήμερα (με καβούρδισμα των σπόρων δηλαδή και βράσιμό τους) άρχισε γ'υρω στο 14ο αιώνα. Η πρώτη λεπτομερής αναφορά που έχουμε για την προέλευση και τη χρήση του καφέ είναι μια εργασία του Αμπντ Αλ Καντίρ Αλ-ΤΖαζίρι από τα 1587, όπου αναφέρεται ότι ο πρώτος που καθιέρωσε τη χρήση του καφέ ήταν ο μουφτής του Άντεν τον 14ο αιώνα.
Από την Υεμένη ο καφές διαδόθηκε βορειότερα, στη Μέκκα και τη Μεδίνα και από εκεί στις μεγάλες πόλεις της βόρειας Αφρικής. Η ιδιότητα του καφέ να καταπολεμά την υπνηλία τον έκανε δημοφιλή ανάμεσα στους Σούφι, ενώ καθώς το Κοράνι απαγορεύει τη χρήση αλκοόλ ο καφές θεωρήθηκε ένα καλό υποκατάστατο, και από κοινωνικής άποψης η χρήση του ήταν ίδια με αυτή του αλκοόλ στη Δύση: τα καφεποτεία γίνονταν τόπος συνάθροισης, συζητήσεων, διασκέδασης ή και τζόγου. Τα πρώτα καφεποτεία άνοιξαν στη Μόκα, που ήταν και το κύριο λιμάνι από το οποίο γινόταν η διακίνηση του καφέ. Αρκετές φορές λόγω του χαρακτήρα τους τα καφεποτεία έγιναν τόπος πολιτικής συζήτησης και δραστηριότητας, και για αυτό έγιναν αρκετές προσπάθειες να κλείσουν, χωρίς όμως επιτυχία λόγω της δημοτικότητας του ροφήματος. Την ίδια τύχη είχαν και οι προσπάθειες να απαγορευτεί γενικά ο καφές σαν διεγερτική ουσία, τόσο από σκληροπυρηνικούς ιμάμηδες στη Μέκκα και το Κάιρο, όσο και από την Αιθιοπική Εκκλησία αργότερα.

Τα πρώτα καφεποτεία άνοιξαν στη Μόκα, που ήταν και το κύριο λιμάνι από το οποίο γινόταν η διακίνηση του καφέ. Αρκετές φορές λόγω του χαρακτήρα τους τα καφεποτεία έγιναν τόπος πολιτικής συζήτησης και δραστηριότητας, και για αυτό έγιναν αρκετές προσπάθειες να κλείσουν, χωρίς όμως επιτυχία λόγω της δημοτικότητας του ροφήματος. Την ίδια τύχη είχαν και οι προσπάθειες να απαγορευτεί γενικά ο καφές σαν διεγερτική ουσία, τόσο από σκληροπυρηνικούς ιμάμηδες στη Μέκκα και το Κάιρο, όσο και από την Αιθιοπική Εκκλησία αργότερα.
