Η Μονή του Αγ. Ιωάννη του Προδρόμου

Η Μονή του Αγ. Ιωάννη του Προδρόμου Αττάλης, βρίσκεται σε απόσταση 30 χλμ περίπου ανατολικά του Ρεθύμνου, πολύ κοντά στον παραθαλάσσιο οικισμό Μπαλί. Η αρχιτεκτονική της Μονής χρονολογείται την περίοδο της Βενετοκρατίας (16ος – 17ος αιώνας). Γύρω στο 1630 – 1635 φαίνεται ότι η Μονή ανακαινίστηκε ριζικά.
Το Καθολικό της Μονής είναι ένας δίκλιτος ναός τα κλίτη του οποίου επικοινωνούν με δύο μεγάλα τοξωτά ανοίγματα. Το αρχικό, βόρειο κλίτος είναι αφιερωμένο στη Γέννηση του Αγ. Ιωάννου του Προδρόμου, ενώ το νότιο στην Αποτομή του. Ο ναός μετατράπηκε στη συνέχεια σε απλό δίκλιτο, πιθανότατα κατά το 16ο αιώνα. Το περίτεχνο θύρωμα με τις έντονα δυτικές επιδράσεις είναι τοξωτό και εγγράφεται σε ορθογώνιο λιθανάγλυφο πλαίσιο, το οποίο επιστέφεται από τριγωνικό αέτωμα. Τα ανάγλυφα αγιοθύριδα φέρουν απλό γεωμετρικό και φυτικό διάκοσμο.
Η μεγάλη Τράπεζα της Μονής βρίσκεται στο νότιο τμήμα της εσωτερικής αυλής. Πρόκειται για μια επιμήκη αίθουσα, η είσοδος της οποίας βρίσκεται στη δυτική πλευρά, όπου επίσης υπάρχουν ένα ανάλογης μορφής παράθυρο και μια μικρή κόγχη. Στο βόρειο τοίχο, σώζονται σε κακή κατάσταση διατήρησης τοιχογραφίες που χρονολογούνται στις αρχές του 17ου αιώνα.
