Στόχος της διάταξης OBREC είναι να επιτρέπει την εισχώρηση όσο δυνατόν μεγαλύτερης παροχής υπερπήδησης στην δεξαμενή, δημιουργώντας επαρκές ύψος της στήλης νερού για την παραγωγή ενέργειας. Η απόδοση της είναι ανάλογη με την ποσότητα νερού που εισέρχεται στη δεξαμενή μέσω της παροχή υπερπήδησης, αλλά και του καθαρού υδραυλικού ύψους του νερού πάνω από τον υδροστρόβιλο, δηλαδή τη συνολική στήλη νερού που συμβολίζεται ως Hκ. Περιλαμβάνει τη στήλη νερού που βρίσκεται μέσα στην δεξαμενή και συμβολίζεται με h1, αλλά και το νερό που βρίσκεται μέσα στον σωλήνα πάνω από τον υδροστρόβιλο, το οποίο συμβολίζεται με hs. Η υψομετρική θέση του υδροστροβίλου επίσης θα πρέπει να είναι πάνω από το επίπεδο της Μ.Σ.Η ή οριακά στο ύψος αυτής, διασφαλίζοντας την κίνηση του νερού
