Τα Σκανδιναβικά «Jul» (Χριστούγεννα) έχουν τις ρίζες τους σε αρχαία γεωργικά έθιμα του Χειμώνα και της εποχής της συγκομιδής. Ο Julenissen όπως ονομάζεται ο Νορβηγός Άγιος Βασίλης, μαζί με τους βοηθούς του φέρνει δώρα και καλή τύχη στο σπίτι και στο στάβλο.

Τη νύχτα των Χριστουγέννων τα παιδιά βάζουν μπολ με κουρκούτι από αλεύρι σαν προσφορά στον Julenissen που επισκέπτεται τα παιδιά της Νορβηγίας, ολοκληρώνοντας το μακρινό του ταξίδι από τη Λαπωνία πάνω στο έλκηθρο που το σέρνουν τάρανδοι.
