Η υποκειμενική φύση της σχεδίασης ατμοσφαιρικού φωτισμού, απαιτεί μια διεπιστημονική προσέγγιση η οποία αντλεί στοιχεία από ένα μεγάλο εύρος γνωστικών πεδίων. Η σχεδιαστική διαδικασία βασίζεται στις αρχές της ανθρωπολογικής σχεδίασης, δηλαδή δεν είναι προσανατολισμένη στην επίλυση προβλημάτων ούτε σε ένα προκαθορισμένο πλαίσιο χρήσης (Gunn, Donovan 2012). Δεν βασίζεται στην υποστήριξη της λειτουργικότητας, αλλά στη επίτευξη εμπειριών με νόημα αντιμετωπίζοντας τόσο τους χρήστες, όσο και τους σχεδιαστές σαν μοναδικές προσωπικότητες με συναισθήματα, επιθυμίες, ανάγκες και φόβους και τη σχεδίαση σαν ευκαιρία για δημιουργία.
Για μια διεπιστημονική έρευνα που προσεγγίζει ολιστικά το θέμα, είναι χρήσιμη η αναζήτηση πέρα από την αντικειμενική γνώση, μέσα από τις προσωπικές εμπειρίες, (Nimkulrat, 2012) για την κατανόηση της εμπειρικής γνώση που συναντάται στην χειροτεχνία η οποία παρέχει δυνατότητες για τη διερεύνηση της σχέσης μεταξύ της αλληλεπίδρασης με το υλικό και του ενσώματου νου (Groth, 2016).
